Getting To Know Your Inner Warrior: Why You Should Try Paintball By Janette Vince
Paintball is as close to a military war game as civilians can get. In paintball, you’ll navigate a natural obstacle course of fields, woods, hills and valleys; plan defensive and offensive maneuvers; and work with your team to win. If you’ve never tried before, here are seven reasons why you should.
It’s great exercise. In many games, you’ll be playing on an obstacle course that could be several acres in size. You’ll be running, jumping, hiding, and shooting among hills, valleys, and other natural features. requires stamina. It’s great exercise—and it’s far more interesting than simply jogging the same route each day or running on a treadmill at the gym. Play a few games, and you’ll burn plenty of calories.
It’s not just physical. As good as it is for your body, is also good for your mind. To succeed at requires strategic thinking. You’ll need to plan offensive and defensive strategies to capture that flag, defend that fort, or take out that team. Good strategies for include both aggressive tactics and defensive elements such as ambushes, snipers, and the element of surprise. You may be surprised to find that this game is far more cerebral than you thought it would be.
It’s a team sport. can be played with small or large groups. It’s a great activity for office team-building, family get-togethers, or even an adventurous first date. During a game, you’ll rely on your team to win—nobody can do it on their own. The best part about is assessing the strengths of each team member and assigning everyone a job that fits their abilities. This way, everyone participates in helping the team win.
It’s safer than you think. Many people see the guns and hear about the stinging paintballs, and believe the game isn’t safe. But in a well-run facility, this game is relatively risk-free. A good facility will brief all players on safety before the game starts, and many will send a professional out with your team to ensure the rules are being followed. Safety measures include never firing on a close target; keeping goggles on at all times in the field; and wearing protective clothing such as gloves and athletic cups. Your facility should provide you with goggles and other protective gear as part of their package.

don’t hurt…too much. The paintballs do hurt when they hit you—and that keeps some people from trying the game. However, you can reduce the pain from a hit by wearing the right clothing. Wear loose-fitting sweatpants, wind pants, sweatshirts, and light, long-sleeved shirts in layers. Avoid jeans, as they are difficult to move in, and don’t wear heavy jackets—even in winter, you’ll overheat. Most importantly, avoid wearing t-shirts and shorts even in warm weather. A hit on bare skin is painful and could break the skin.
There’s a place for everyone. There’s a place in for every personality type. If you’re an aggressive, athletic person, you’ll definitely be a valuable player. But also requires stealth and surprise. If you’re not particularly keen on running up to an enemy with guns blazing, try taking up a position as a sniper. If athletics isn’t your thing, you may be a talented strategist. The best thing about is that it helps people discover hidden talents.
It’s fun. is far more exciting and challenging than your typical weekend football game. It incorporates strategy and physical activity, stealth and aggression—and many types of players are valuable. Once you experience the exhilaration of watching your well-laid plans succeed, you’re sure to want to play again. It’s a thrill to win, but even if you lose, you’re sure to have a good time.
Paintball allows you to let loose and discover your “inner warrior.” But being aggressive isn’t all there is to it. Sometimes, the most valuable player is the one who knows when to hang back and stay calm. Aggressive players get taken out quickly—but a calm, cool-headed sniper can often make the difference between success and failure. So even if you can’t quite see yourself as an action figure, give a try. You may discover a new way to get in shape, challenge your mind, and have fun with your friends and family.
